Endocrine glands are known as ductless glands because they do not use tubes or ducts to transport their secretions. Instead, they release hormones into the surrounding tissue fluid. These hormones then enter the bloodstream and travel to specific target organs.

How Ductless Glands Work
Endocrine glands produce chemical messengers called hormones. After secretion, hormones enter the blood and circulate throughout the body. Although they travel through the bloodstream, they act only on cells or organs containing the correct receptors.

Endocrine and Exocrine Glands

Exocrine glands use ducts to carry substances such as sweat, saliva and digestive enzymes to a body surface or cavity.
